FOREWORD

The municipality of Vaslui is a piece of Romanian land with an outstanding strategic position.

As a princely city and a former capital city of Lower Moldavia, it keeps proudly in mind the memory of the brilliant victory from Podul Inalt of the great prince Stephen and the holy treasure of the princely church.

The beauty and the importance of the place favoured the apparition of exceptional material, spiritual and cultural-artistic values.

Over the centuries the city of Vaslui was an important commercial and customs centre of medieval Moldavia and was involved in the fulfillment of the ideals of the Romania people: the Union of the Principalities and the obtaining of the Independence. It is since 1968 the capital city of present-day Vaslui County.

The new administrative prerogatives have contributed to the transformation of the locality into a modern city, full of vitality and concerned with the enhancement of its inhabitants’ standard of living in accordance with the requirements of the European Union.

The present album intends to present the most interesting and beautiful sides of our city, hoping that, once you get here, you will manage to discover not only worth visiting, delightful places, but also wonderful people.

A short introduction in history

The city of Vaslui, first mentioned in written documents on March 31 1423, takes pride in its glorious past and invaluable treasures of spiritual beauty.

From the first archaeological evidence since the Paleolithic Age and the civilization of the Getae and Dacians to the fame of a princely residence and the capital city of Lower Moldavia, whose importance was strengthened by Prince Stephen the Great, the city of Vaslui has been a homeland of culture and civilization.

Architectural monuments

The architectural monuments of the city of Vaslui are invaluable and part of the national cultural heritage. They reflect the creative spirit of the inhabitants as well as the importance the city had in the 15th century. The period of time during which it was temporary residence and the capital city of Lower Moldavia is richly illustrated by the remains of the medieval ensemble of the Princely Court and by the Clay Fortress.

Worship buildings

The churches in the city of Vaslui provide evidence not only for the oldness of the city but also for the contribution of the inhabitants to the development of the Romanian architecture.
